Edmond Malone is the original scholar to have seen the diary of Philip Henslowe and included material from it in his own Plays and Poems of William Shakespeare in 1790 (vol. 1, part 2). The story he tells is that the diary came into his hands as he was bringing the Shakespeare collection into print, and he made room for the new discovery, taking the time to edit the playlists and provide notes. In many cases still, Malone's opinion has held up.
