Giles Allen owned the land on which the playhouse known as the Theater was built. He refused to renew the lease with the Burbages in 1596 because he wanted to build tenements (modern term: apartments) on the property. Frustrated by Allen's intransigence, the Burbages hired a crew (including themselves) to dismantle the Theater building over Christmastide (1597-8) and transport the usable materials to their new site across the Thames on Maid (or Maiden) Lane.
