1640 is resonant in the playhouse world because Thomas Heywood, the last of the contemporaries of Shakespeare, had recently died; it is resonant in the book trade because it is part of a flood in which many plays are sold to stationers and printed (or not!). Politically, it anticipates 1642, long believed by theater historians to have been the year in which playhouses in London were officially closed.
